Pybus Foundation is pleased to announce the 2020 Spirit if Pybus Poster Contest Winners.

This year, for the first time, the Art Committee selected two winners, Stephanie Waterbury and Sasha Syssoeva. Pybus Foundation will be hosting an event July 18th to introduce the award winners. The artists will have a tent on the Pybus Plaza from 10am – 12 noon, signing and selling their posters. The signed posters will be $30.00 each, the proceeds go to Pybus Foundation.

“We had so many great submissions, it was hard to make a selection.” said JoAnn Walker, Chair of Pybus Foundation’s Art Committee.

Artist: Stephanie Waterbury

Bio:

Stephanie Waterbury is a local oncology nurse, mountain worshiper and part-time art-dabbler. She enjoys flirting with many media such as colored pencil, ink and vinyl stickers, but focuses more on acrylic. (She prefers the dry time as it suits her level of patience). This painting embodies the nitty-gritty of what she sees as a “marketplace.” Stephanie believes that the in-person exchange of locally grown or made products is essential in an increasingly robotic culture. As Stephanie says, “What is the true “Spirit of Pybus? Beets me, but I would venture to define it pragmatically as the engagement of community members in supporting local food, healthy lifestyles and quality services in the Wenatchee Valley”.

Artist: Sasha Syssoeva

Bio:

Sasha and her daughter moved to East Wenatchee several years ago and have been coming to Pybus Market frequently on weekends. She has been an artist since she was a kid. Sasha went to an art school in Russia, and then moved to the USA as a young adult. Pybus Market is a special place to her as an immigrant and an American. To Sasha, Pybus Market represents the best of American ideals: family, hard work, humble beginnings, capitalism and freedom to be who you want to be. “The generosity of a local businessman Mike Walker and his wife, JoAnn created a place for community gatherings and inspired other local entrepreneurs to start their business inside and outside the Market.” said Sasha. One of her favorite places to shop is the Royal Produce, “I always find the best asparagus and apples there, and my daughter loves the green smoothie with honey! In my poster I featured the owner of Royal Produce Santos Guadarrama. Santos’ story of building his farm business with his wife is what America is about”, said Syssoeva. Although Sasha is trained in traditional painting, for the Spirit of Pybus poster she decided to use an illustration style of America circa 1950s – the glorious times when the country emerged from the great challenge of World War II, which she finds relevant in the current challenge of COVID-19. “Americans are strong and will stay strong through hard times”, said Sasha.
