In The Weeds is a collection of paintings showing the relationships we see in our natural landscape through pattern and colorful designs. My interest lies in making complex foliage, where microbiomes are key to creating a thriving ecosystem. There is an emphasis on using common flowers from local gardens and landscape, because they’re what’s accessible to us, and they’re also things we find all across the Pacific Northwest. It’s important to show that flowers we know are a part of our agricultural system that come all the way up through the Americas. Many plants and animals you’ll see in this collection are also a part of other ecosystems outside of Washington and this shows the beauty of migration and ecological factors that allow plants and animals to live in multiple environments. This informs my intricate weaving of plants, animals, and insects. In both a literal and figurative way, we often find ourselves in the weeds.
